Another obituary posted on Canon Funeral Home Website:
Delois Bernice Laumen died Friday, December 29, 2017 at age 96. Known as Bee to all her friends and family, she was born upstairs in a house on Texas Avenue in downtown Houston on August 25, 1921 to Dot and T.W. Fisher. She was an accomplished artist, history buff, and lover of Biblical history, Bible study, and sports. Art was always an important part of her life and she almost made a career of it after she sent off her drawings to Walt Disney Studios in California at age eighteen. Disney’s initial reply to her drawings admonished her for tracing the iconic Mickey and other characters, but she responded with a note explaining they were indeed freehand! She turned down their offer to serve as a cartoonist mostly because of her young age.
As 1939 graduate of Sam Houston High School, she spent some time as a beautician before going to work at Wyatt Metal and Boiler Works as a draftsman. With only her high school drafting class education and as the only woman in the department, she became one of the top draftsmen for Wyatt. It was there at Wyatt that Bee met her future husband, Johnnie Laumen. While he continued to work there until his retirement, she quit her job as draftsman to become a full time mom to three children, Dawn, Dean, and Darla. Bee also worked many years at the family business, Fisher Florist, as a designer.
As the children grew up and moved out, Bee renewed her interest in art and carving. She was self-taught and never had any formal training but over her lifetime created many intricate and beautiful paintings, carvings, reliefs and pieces of jewelry. She and Johnnie moved to Waller County in the 1990’s where she worked tirelessly on her gardens and art, and even laid an expansive stone patio all on her own! She lived there after his death for several years before moving to the Watercrest At Bryan retirement center in Bryan, Texas.
A lifelong Christian, Bee also found time to take Greek and Hebrew classes so she could have a better understanding of God’s word. She could quote scripture easily and developed quite a knowledge of the Word. Bee loved the Astros and followed them faithfully. Thankfully, she lived to see them crowned World Champions. Bee was active at 96: she played cards every week with her friends at Watercrest and was always ready to go out and eat, especially hot dogs, anytime someone would take her. Her stamina was admired by many several years (even decades) her junior, and was known to ride bicycles and scooters at holiday functions for the fun of it. She loved humor and to laugh, and was admired by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren for her zest. Bee lived a long life, touching many through the years and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her sister, children, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
